Education
Rep. Veasey has helped lead the fight to raise teacher pay to the national average and to help teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other school employees with the rising cost of health insurance. Veasey voted to provide our children with the up-to date textbooks they need to be successful. He led the fight against school vouchers to keep our public schools receiving much needed resources. In addition, in 2007 he passed legislation that increased TRS benefits to retired teachers by granting a “13th Check”, to assist with cost of living increases.
Rep. Veasey authored and helped pass HB 2504, an education bill that will provide for students struggling with mathematics and algebra. HB 2504 creates a pilot program administered by the Commissioner of Education wherein schools can establish incentive support programs for these students struggling with math. These programs will give students access to better tutoring and support as well as the technological tools to help them improve their mastery of math and algebra . As Texas’s economy becomes even more technologically oriented, math and algebra skills will become essential to finding a lucrative career. HB 2504 will help prepare our school children for a better future.
